2023 New Year’s Resolutions: Photography Edition
January 30th, 2023
And again, a new year begins.
Did you know that the above photo is one of my favorite candids I’ve ever taken? It was taken several years ago at a graveyard tea party hosted by a local Tulsa oddities shop. I had done a previous shoot for the shop, Tulsa Obscura, shortly after their grand opening. I was invited to the event and jumped at the chance to tag along.
The above photo isn’t one I show off very often. For one, this was the only time I had met this happy couple, and I regret to say that I don’t even remember their names. I remember the impression they made on me though. They had shown up impeccably dressed for the occasion, and the girl had brought with her a magnificent tea set. They were a bit of an oddity themselves - she was missing a tooth, gorgeously so, and I feel like I remember they had matching necklaces featuring their teeth! If you’re alarmed, don’t be. They were positively delightful, and if there’s one thing I appreciate, it’s a good, healthy diversity of personalities within communities.
I had flitted about the tea party taking photos of all of the guests, and this candid still stands out to me today. The hand holding. What they’re wearing. The apple, recently devoured. Her big, gapped smile. Their relaxed figures; the utter bliss captured. None of it was staged. I live for moments like this.

Here’s a few other photos from that day. Why am I telling you all of this anyway? Because this is what photography used to mean to me. Somewhere along the way, it lost its magic. I stopped trying. I stopped reaching out. I stopped bringing my camera places. Today, the only photos I take are at work. And while being the marketing director at a vet clinic is probably one of the best jobs ever known to man, I do miss the sense of adventure that photography used to bring me.
I got my first dslr camera at 19-years-old. I was thrilled! I had wanted one for years! Back then it was all colors and new techniques and trying to replicate what I saw in fashion and rock-and-roll magazines. Slowly, friends and family began asking me to take photos for them, and I transitioned more into traditional, lifestyle work. I had originally wanted to make a living from photography, but somewhere along the way it turned into oh-my-camera’s-always-there-if-I-need-it. This year, I want to revive my photography as a proper “side hustle.” I don’t want to half-ass it anymore. I want to whole-ass it this time. I’m not sure if that’s quite a professional thing to say, but in a world where there’s a million different photographers to choose from, choose a personality that speaks to you.
And so that brings me to my photography resolutions for the year. Yes, it’s the end of the month. Shush. These days I work, and single mom, and am finishing up my degree while struggling to maintain some version of a social life…so it took a bit to get the website and social media updated and running again. But I’m here now, and ready to move forward.
Resolution #1
Get active again.
My first goal this year is to stay on top of it, even when I don’t have a session. Yes, I’m busy, and it won’t be easy. Somehow I want to find the time to shoot new things, write blogs, and post to social media.
Resolution #2
More weddings.
Because look at them. Look at them. The dress. The decorations. The guests. The monumental memories. The moments you get no where else.
Resolution #3
Ditch my comfort zone.
This goes for all of it. I want to get back to collaborating. I want to attend more events. Even in my sessions, I want to try more out-of-the-box thinking with lighting and posing.
Resolution #4
Back to story-telling.
At the heart of it all, I’m a story-teller. Events and weddings, of course. But even in sessions, consider objectively what’s actually happening. I am capturing a moment in time. You or your family won’t look or feel like that in five years time. Even going out and getting your photos professionally taken is, in itself, an experience that doesn’t happen every day. And I just get to be there for that. I want to really have fun with my blog this year like I used to!
So here’s to 2023 and reviving my freelance! If you’d like to go along with me on this journey, I’d love to have you. It’s been a challenging last few years for everyone - so let’s hope this year has a lot of good in store for us all.
Happy New Year!
